English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur named former Brentford manager Thomas Frank as its new head coach on Thursday.

Frank signed a three-year contract to become the 13th manager in club history.

Frank, 51, replaces Ange Postecoglou, who was fired on June 6, 16 days after he piloted Spurs to their first Europa League title. The squad defeated Manchester United, 1-0 in Bilbao, Spain.

“In Thomas we are appointing one of the most progressive and innovative head coaches within the game,” the club said in a statement. “He has a proven track record in player and squad development and we look forward to him leading the team as we prepare for the season ahead.”

The glory of winning the hardware did not erase the sting of Tottenham’s worst EPL campaign since 1977. Spurs finished 17th of 20 clubs, with an 11-22-5 mark, for 38 points and were the last team to avoid relegation.

Frank managed Brentford, another London-based club, for the past seven years. He oversaw the club’s promotion in 2021 after they captured the title in the Championship League. Brentford (16-14-8, 56 points) has unexpectedly shown upward movement in the last four years and placed 10th this season. They were a plus-9 in goal differential and tallied 66 times, fifth-most in the EPL.

In his two years at Tottenham, Postecoglou recorded a mark of 47-39-15.

After his playing career, Frank coached in his native Denmark from 2008-16 before taking the Brentford position in 2018.

Three members of Frank’s staff at Brentford will join him at Spurs. Assistant coach Justin Cochrane, head of athletic performance Chris Haslam and analyst Joe Newton will be accompanied by Andreas Georgson, a former assistant coach at Manchester United.
